ARCHAEOLOGICAL MARINE COURSE - BY SUPERINTENDENT OF THE SEA PROF. SEBASTIANO TUSA

The archaeological routes studied and designed by the Superintendent of the Sea were all discovered and kept in their original condition, according to rigorous scientific criteria.
In Ustica - Punta Falconiera and Basiluzzo are two routes of archaeological, naturalistic interest.. These itineries are marked by plastic scuba guides that allow divers to visit the sites by directly following the routes and indicting the relevant historical points.

The black pearl of the Mediterranean

The island of Ustica (PA), is the only island in the province of Palermo, and is located 36 miles north of the city, known as “The black pearl of the Mediterranean” for its volcanic features, various shades of colour ranging from black lava to green vineyards, orchards and relaxing pinewood, all enhanced by the intense blue sea.
The sea is the true protagonist of the island, a paradise for divers and those seeking an unpolluted sea. On an island rich in history where remains of ancient civilizations can be found. The integrity of the environment is safeguarded even from the Marine Nature Reserve, which includes a magnificent archaeological scuba dive path.
Nice and pleasant to visit the country and Ustica with its narrow streets and famous square.

Snorkeling and small coves for young ones at the Marine Protected Area Integral “A”.
The Marine Protected Area “Ustica” since 1986 has divided the sea of Ustica into three zones: zone A Integral Reserve, zone B General Reservee and zone C Partial Reserve. The AMP, managed by the Council or the Captain, has very strict regulations.
In Zone A, which starts from Caletta Spalmatore and ends a bit beyond Punta Megna, you can swim or tresspass to reach the sea except the two bays marked by a special billboard placed at their entrances.

Cala Sidoti (Spalmatore area):  is located within the Integral Reserve and below the tower of Spalmatore. Snorkeling this bay of volcanic sand and pebbles is spectacular, in fact , in only a few inches of water you can see numerous species of nektonic (fish, shellfish) and many benthic species (plants and marine algae). The sea is accessible to children and reaches a depth of 5 meters where you can also find small shoals of barracuda approaching the coast at dawn and dusk to hunt.

Cala Acquarium (Spalmatore area) : is located below the Tower of Spalmatore in the Integral Reserve A with the only permit to swim. Snorkeling in this stretch of sea is spectacular, in fact, in only a few inches of water you can see the sea of bright tomato red, and green anemone and many colorful fish. Here you see groupers, gobies, blennies glances, salps, bream and violets peaceful between shellfish and starfish. The bay is one of the most popular on the island thanks to its access and its pebble beach suitable for children.
